Caring for a Breakout
When it comes to treating a breakout, the most important thing to know is where that breakout came from. This can be rather difficult, but an important tool for treating breakouts. There are a few different ways we can treat breakouts depending on the reason for the breakout. We will talk about those as well as a general remedy for any breakout. If you would like a professional evaluation – we offer complimentary consulations with our aestetic nurses that can help you develop a treatment plan for your skin concern.
Oil
Oil is the most common cause of acne breakouts. Having too much oil in the skin causes the pores to clog and acne to form. If we keep our skin clear of excess oil, the more likely we are to rid our skin of breakouts or keep a breakout from forming. The best ingredient to rid the skin of excess oil is salicylic acid.
Bacteria
We have a specific bacteria in the skin that causes acne. It forms when there is no oxygen present when the bacteria is also present at the same time inside the pore. If we expose the pore to oxygen, the bacteria cannot survive therefore removing the acne source from the pore. The best ingredient to use for oxygenating bacteria in the skin is benzoyl peroxide. Kathy Filbeck, FNP can evaluate your acne to see if prescription antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide might be right for you.
Dead Skin
If we have a build-up of dead skin inside the pores, this will also cause acne. Our pores need to stay clear and oxygenated to be healthy and acne-free. Using an exfoliator at least 3 times per week will keep our dead cells exfoliated and prevent them from being trapped in the skin. Microdermabrasion and Chemical peels are some of the most effetive treatments to remove a build-up of dead skin and leave you with a radiant glow.
Hormones
Hormonal acne can be the most difficult to treat since the problem is coming from within our bodies. It is also difficult to detect since we typically don’t notice it is there until we see the breakout. A good indicator to know if your acne is hormonal is where your face is seeing the breakout. If your breakout is just along the chin and jawline but nowhere else, it is hormonal acne. Keeping your hormones balanced is the best way to prevent hormonal acne. If it does reach the surface a cause a break-out, using a leave- on glycolic acid or salicylic acid serum is the best way to rid that breakout. Katherine Filbeck, FNP can help evaulate and treat hormonal based breakouts. Book Today.
Menopause
Otherwise known as adult acne, menopausal breakouts are very common when you are about to, currently going through, or just went through menopause. Because the hormones are adjusting and at higher or lower levels than normal, acne breakouts are very common. Treating this type of breakout is the same as treating hormonal acne with a leave-on glycolic or salicylic serum.
Dehydration
A lack of hydration can also cause the skin to breakout. Typically since there is not enough water in the skin cells they become dry and they die faster than a normal healthy cell. As we mentioned above, having too many dead skin cells in the skin will clog the pores and cause a breakout. Drinking more water or using a moisturizer with a water base (water as the first ingredient) will keep the cells healthy longer to prevent a build-up. IV Hydration therapy, with custom vitamins and minerals can be a quick way to restore your skin and overall health.
Diet
We have all heard the phrase “you are what you eat” before and this is completely true for your skin. Our skin is the biggest organ in our bodies and it is the way we absorb and get rid of toxins. If we have lots of toxins coming into our body, they are all going to come out and usually it’s on the skin. If you have consistent break-out all over your face and have a fast food or processed diet, chances are that’s what’s causing your acne. Drinking lots of water and eating clean foods will internally lower your toxins and prevent them from coming out as often on the skin. Koolau Clinic offers provider guided nutritional plans along with FDA approved pharmaceuticals to help you achieve a healthy weight, and improve overall skin health.
